The Cartier Santos is arguably the most important wristwatch ever made - believed to be the very first wristwatch ever made.
The story goes that famous pilot Alberto Santos-Dumont complained to his friend Louis Cartier that his pocket watch was too impractical to use whilst flying - the rest is history.
In 1987, the Santos was completely revised, renamed, and relaunched as the Santos Galbée. The case lost its boxy looks and became more curved around the lugs, fitting better on the wrist than the original Santos.
The Santos Galbée was then updated in 2005 with the release of the Santos Galbée XL. The case was made larger, reflecting the trend towards larger watches at the time. Powered by an automatic ETA calibre. It also featured a date window in the corner between 4 and 5 o’clock. It created a well-balanced dial that stayed true to the classic Santos design.
This modern example from 2014 is a beautifully robust and elegant model in full steel with the traditional silvered dial. An absolute classic in pristine condition.
