The Big Pilot finds its origins in a world preparing for war. The Luftwaffe needed 1,000 highly-readable watches for their flight navigators and IWC came in with the “B-Uhr” (short for Beobachtungs-uhren, “Observation Watches” in English).
Over 60 years later IWC took their new automatic movement, paired it with this original design, adapted it for a small seconds complication and crowned it the “Big Pilot”, owing to its (surprisingly wearable!) 46.2mm diameter and notably large crown.
Several variations have sprung up since this release, with multiple limited editions such as the Top Gun crossover in 2012. This example is one of just 50 worldwide made in partnership with renowned Italian jewellers Bartorelli on their 125th anniversary, featuring a titanium case with a black dial. You have a small seconds complication and a 7-day power reserve complication. 25 of the 50 came as a set of three commemorative timepieces alongside an AP and an A. Lange, making this in effect one of just 25 sold standalone!
Presented in good condition, complete with full box and papers plus our three month warranty. We have priced it with condition in mind and believe it could benefit from a service if the new owner desires. We are asking for half of the price of a new Big Pilot, and half of the price of the only other one available in this set worldwide!
