The Rolex That Defied Convention
The Iconic Legacy
The Rolex Milgauss is unlike any other Rolex.
Originally introduced in 1956, it was created not for divers, pilots or racing drivers, but for scientists, engineers and technicians working in environments with powerful magnetic fields. At a time when magnetism could severely affect the accuracy of a mechanical watch, Rolex developed the Milgauss to resist magnetic fields of up to 1,000 gauss, hence its name.
Reference 116400GV is perhaps the most distinctive Milgauss ever produced.
It introduced the now iconic green sapphire crystal, still unique to Rolex, alongside the unmistakable orange lightning bolt seconds hand that pays tribute to the original 1950s design.
Discontinued in 2023, the Milgauss has become one of the most sought after modern Rolex references, representing one of the brand’s most unconventional and collectible creations.
Why You’ll Love It
The only Rolex ever fitted with a factory green sapphire crystal
Distinctive orange lightning bolt seconds hand inspired by the original Milgauss
Designed specifically to resist magnetic fields up to 1,000 gauss
Recently fully serviced and unworn since completion of that work
Complete set presented in excellent pre-owned condition
A discontinued Rolex that is becoming increasingly collectible
One of the most individual and recognisable modern Rolex sports watches
The Milgauss has always appealed to collectors who want something different.
While Submariners and GMT Masters are instantly recognisable, the Milgauss quietly stands apart. The green sapphire crystal changes the appearance of the watch depending on the light, creating subtle flashes of green around the edge of the case that no other Rolex can replicate.
Inside, Rolex engineered a soft iron Faraday cage to shield the movement from magnetic interference, making the Milgauss one of the most technically interesting watches in the brand’s history.
Freshly serviced in June 2026 and unworn since, this example is ready to be enjoyed immediately.
Iconic Status
The Rolex built for science rather than sport.
While most Rolex Professional models were developed for explorers, divers or pilots, the Milgauss was created for an entirely different audience.
Scientists working in laboratories, medical facilities and research institutions needed a mechanical watch that could continue performing accurately despite powerful magnetic fields. Rolex answered that challenge with one of the most technically innovative watches of its era.
The 116400GV took that heritage and transformed it into one of Rolex’s boldest modern designs. The green sapphire crystal remains exclusive to the Milgauss, while the orange lightning bolt seconds hand has become one of the most recognisable details in modern watchmaking.
Since its discontinuation in 2023, collectors have increasingly recognised the Milgauss as one of the most distinctive and important modern Rolex references.
