Don’t buy a new Tank. Seriously. When you can have an example steeped in history, originating from the model’s heyday, in like-new condition… why would you buy a brand-new model with no history for multiples of the price?
As the story goes, the original Cartier Tank was conceived when Louis Cartier considered the form of a Renault FT-17 tank seen from above. A long, rectangular case with curved lug-ends. Whether or not this was true, it had become mythology, and once Cartier had presented the prototype to General John Pershing, Commander of the American Expeditionary Force (Europe), there was no going back on the conveniently fascinating marketing story.
The Tank Louis Cartier found its origins in 1922 and has become THE Cartier Tank among dozens of variations over the century named after Louis Cartier, the man who conceived the Tank.
This was especially prevalent in the 1920’s with stars such as Rudolph Valentino wearing the Tank amoung many Hollywood stars and into the 70s, right at the time where boxing legend Muhammad Ali famously wore a Cartier Tank despite its smaller size.
What makes this variation of the Tank so special over the standard Tanks is the use of solid 18k gold throughout. Not plated, not capped - SOLID. You won’t find this on any Must de Cartier or any of our recent listings either, and they don’t show up in such incredible condition very often so a rare treat to find.
This watch screams of 90’s glamour, elegance and sophistication, and its neo-vintage elements will stand out from a mile off to a collector, but could be brand new to a novice, a truly delightful character trait for this watch. This particular example has just had a full service and polish, on a brand new leather strap with the original Cartier buckle - so could not be in better condition if you tried!
