Originally launched in 1963 as the Cosmograph, a manual-wind chronograph for race car drivers, the Cosmograph Daytona obtained its name two years later in 1965 when Rolex became the official timekeeper for the famed Daytona NASCAR race.

This remained a fairly low-production and unpopular model until the first automatic Daytona launched in 1988, after which sales began to soar and it became cemented as the coveted series that it is today. This was further propelled into history’s halls of fame in 2017 when a vintage model reference 6239 owned by actor Paul Newman sold for $17.8m, the most expensive wristwatch ever sold. Daytona’s are known for being unobtainable through Rolex authorised dealers the world over.

This reference, the 16523 is coveted among collectors as one of the first to feature the automatic movement noted above. This movement was outsourced from Zenith then modified significantly in-house to suit the needs of the Daytona. Furthermore, this example features the infamous “inverted 6” on the bottom subdial, where the 6 is upside down to follow the rotation of the subdial, appearing as 9. Whilst this is likely just an urban myth, some still say this was born out of an error at Rolex…

This rare example is presented in incredible condition, even though it is nearly 30 years old, and is presented with a Rolex box, our certificate of authenticity and our 3 month warranty! This is a true collector’s piece and a very unique addition to any collection.
