Breitling’s relationship with diving watches stretches back to 1957, when the original Superocean was introduced as the brand’s answer to the rapidly growing world of professional underwater exploration.
Half a century later, the Superocean Heritage revisited that original design rather than simply creating another modern dive watch. The result was cleaner and more restrained than much of Breitling’s output of the period, with the distinctive arrow-shaped hour hand, simple baton markers and mesh bracelet all drawing heavily from the original Superocean.
This 46mm generation has real presence, but it’s the combination on this particular reference that makes it especially interesting. The black dial and polished steel case are joined by an 18ct red-gold bezel, giving what is fundamentally a serious dive watch a completely different character.
Why You’ll Love It
This is one of those Breitlings that makes far more sense once it’s on the wrist. Yes, it’s 46mm, and it certainly isn’t a small watch, but the simple dial, relatively clean case design and flowing mesh bracelet stop it feeling as bulky as the dimensions might suggest.
The gold bezel is what really transforms it. Against the black dial and steel case, the warmth of the red gold gives the watch a much richer appearance without turning it into an overtly two-tone watch. It’s an unusual combination and considerably more interesting in person than the standard all-steel version.
