A Love Story, Told Through Two Rolex Datejusts
The Iconic Legacy
Some watches have a story that makes them considerably more special than their reference number alone might suggest. This is one of them.
On 18th December 1998, a husband and wife purchased two matching Rolex Datejusts here in Guernsey as wedding anniversary presents to one another. Both featured white Roman numeral dials, stainless steel and 18ct yellow gold cases, fluted bezels and Jubilee bracelets. His was the traditional 36mm Datejust, while hers was the smaller 31mm version.
Twenty-eight years later, the two watches have remained together, complete with their original boxes and paperwork, each bearing exactly the same purchase date.
I acquired both watches directly from the couple’s son. He first approached me approximately a year before we eventually agreed the purchase, and I encouraged him to take his time considering whether he genuinely wanted to part with them. Watches with this sort of family history deserve that consideration.
Following their acquisition, both watches underwent a restoration and servicing process that took several months. They are now presented in excellent condition, freshly serviced and unworn since.
And although each watch is available individually, I would love to see them remain together.
Why You’ll Love It
The reference 16233 represents one of the most recognisable Rolex Datejust configurations of the 1990s. Its 36mm case, warm yellow gold fluted bezel and two-tone Jubilee bracelet create a combination that is unmistakably Rolex.
The white Roman numeral dial is particularly attractive. Against the polished gold hands and hour markers, it gives the watch a beautifully balanced appearance, combining the richness of yellow gold with the restraint of a clean white dial.
At 36mm, this generation of Datejust also wears differently from many of today’s larger watches. Its proportions are elegant, comfortable and remarkably versatile, equally suited to everyday wear or more formal occasions.
This example has the additional benefit of having just been serviced and remaining unworn since. Its excellent condition and complete original set make it a particularly appealing example, especially when compared with the cost of purchasing a new two-tone Datejust today.
But what really distinguishes this watch is its provenance. The original paperwork dates it to 18th December 1998, the same day as its matching 31mm counterpart. It’s a detail that turns an already desirable vintage Rolex into something considerably more personal.
Iconic Status
The Datejust has been a cornerstone of the Rolex collection since 1945, when it introduced the automatically changing date display to a self-winding, waterproof chronometer wristwatch.
By the late 1990s, reference 16233 represented a particularly successful chapter in its evolution. The traditional 36mm Oyster case, sapphire crystal, automatic Calibre 3135 and combination of stainless steel with 18ct yellow gold brought together decades of Rolex refinement.
The two-tone Datejust also became something of a cultural symbol during this period. It was a watch associated with achievement, important milestones and occasions worth remembering.
That makes the history of this particular example especially fitting.
Purchased as a wedding anniversary gift and accompanied by its matching partner, it represents exactly the sort of personal milestone for which the Datejust has so often been chosen.
The opportunity to acquire two matching examples, purchased together, preserved with their original documentation and now offered together again after almost three decades, is what makes this pair so interesting.
