The Iconic Legacy
The Black Bay began as Tudor looking back at its own diving-watch history. The Chronograph took that familiar formula somewhere quite different.
Tudor has been producing chronographs since 1970, and the Black Bay Chrono brings those two strands of the brand together: the purposeful character of its historic dive watches and the sporting architecture of a traditional two-register chronograph.
The 79363N adds another layer. Steel and yellow gold give the watch warmth without losing the utilitarian feel of the Black Bay, while the black dial and contrasting champagne counters give it a character quite unlike the steel versions.
Why You’ll Love It
Complete set from 2022
41mm steel and yellow gold case
Black dial with contrasting champagne chronograph counters
Tudor Manufacture Calibre MT5813
Column-wheel chronograph with vertical clutch
Approximately 70-hour power reserve
COSC-certified automatic movement
Balance of Tudor’s five-year international warranty
An enormous amount of watchmaking for the money
This is one of those watches where the specification becomes difficult to ignore.
The MT5813 is a serious chronograph movement, with a column wheel, vertical clutch and approximately 70 hours of power reserve. Tudor developed it from Breitling’s B01 architecture, then modified it to its own requirements, including a free-sprung balance with silicon hairspring.
But the reason to buy the 79363N isn’t simply what’s inside.
On the wrist, the combination of black, steel and yellow gold works extremely well. It has the visual presence you expect from a Black Bay Chronograph, but the gold lifts it away from being another conventional steel sports watch.
At this level, there are very few Swiss mechanical chronographs offering this combination of movement, construction and brand pedigree.
Iconic Status
Tudor’s modern resurgence has been built on watches that borrow intelligently from the company’s past without simply reproducing it.
The Black Bay Chrono is a good example. Snowflake hands, screw-down pushers, a fixed tachymeter bezel and two-register dial shouldn’t necessarily belong together, yet the finished watch has developed an identity of its own.
The S&G version takes that already distinctive design and makes it more expressive. It is unmistakably Tudor, but it doesn’t feel like the predictable choice, and that’s a large part of its appeal.
