A Love Story, Told Through Two Rolex Datejusts
The Iconic Legacy
On 18 December 1998, a husband and wife walked into a jeweller here in Guernsey and purchased matching Rolex Datejusts as wedding anniversary presents to one another.
His was a 36mm Datejust, reference 16233. Hers was this beautiful 31mm Datejust, reference 68273.
Both watches featured the same white Roman numeral dial, stainless steel and 18ct yellow gold construction, fluted bezel and Jubilee bracelet. Different sizes, but unmistakably a matching pair.
Almost twenty-eight years later, both watches came into my possession directly from the couple’s son, complete with their original boxes and paperwork documenting exactly the same purchase date.
The process of acquiring them took approximately a year. When he first approached me, I encouraged him to take time before making a decision. Selling a watch that belonged to someone close to you is rarely just a financial transaction, particularly when the watches carry a story like this.
Eventually, he decided the time was right. Both watches then underwent several months of restoration and servicing, bringing them to the excellent condition in which they are now offered.
They have remained together for almost three decades, and ideally, I’d love that story to continue.
Why You’ll Love It
The Datejust 31 is a particularly elegant alternative to the smaller traditional Lady-Datejust. Its 31mm case offers a little more presence on the wrist while retaining the beautifully balanced proportions that make vintage Rolex watches so appealing.
The white Roman numeral dial gives this example a wonderfully classic appearance. Its clean background allows the yellow gold hands, hour markers and fluted bezel to stand out, while the two-tone Jubilee bracelet adds the unmistakable character of a 1990s Rolex.
It’s a watch that works just as beautifully with everyday clothing as it does when dressed up. The combination of steel and gold makes it versatile, while the Roman numeral dial gives it a slightly more refined and jewellery-inspired feel than the traditional baton-marker alternatives.
This particular example is presented in excellent pre-owned condition, having recently undergone servicing and restoration. It remains unworn since that work was completed and is accompanied by its complete original set.
But its real appeal is the history it shares with its matching 36mm counterpart.
The two watches were purchased on the same day, for the same occasion, by two people celebrating their marriage. That original connection has survived through the years, and the accompanying paperwork provides a wonderful tangible link to the day they were bought.
Iconic Status
Rolex introduced the Datejust in 1945, and its combination of practical engineering and elegant design helped establish it as one of the most recognisable luxury watches ever created.
The midsize Datejust occupies an interesting position within that history. At 31mm, it offers a more substantial alternative to the smaller Lady-Datejust while retaining the traditional styling and proportions of the collection.
Reference 68273 is a particularly attractive expression of that design, combining the warmth of 18ct yellow gold with the durability of stainless steel. The fluted bezel, Jubilee bracelet and white Roman numeral dial represent a classic late-20th-century Rolex aesthetic.
Inside sits the automatic Calibre 2135, part of Rolex’s long-established generation of chronometer movements used in its midsize watches.
But what makes this example especially memorable is its connection to another Rolex.
It’s not unusual to find a Datejust from 1998. It’s considerably less common to find two matching examples that were purchased together, retain their original documentation, and have remained in the same family for almost three decades.
These are the sorts of watches that remind us why provenance matters. Sometimes the most interesting part of a watch’s history isn’t who wore it publicly, but the people who owned it privately.

A beautiful Datejust in its own right, with the added significance of a genuinely personal history. I would be delighted to see both watches find a new home together, allowing a story that began with a wedding anniversary in 1998 to continue into its next chapter.
