The Iconic Legacy

Long before Omega became synonymous with the Moonwatch and the Seamaster, the company was producing specialist timepieces for pilots, explorers and professionals who depended on accurate timekeeping.

In 1938, Omega introduced a distinctive pilot’s watch designed with aviation firmly in mind. Its large, highly legible dial, cathedral-style hands and rotating timing bezel reflected an era when a watch was an essential navigational instrument rather than simply an accessory.

More than sixty years later, Omega revisited that original design as the first release in its Museum Collection, a series created to celebrate some of the most interesting and historically significant watches from its archives.

The result was reference 5700.50.07, a remarkably faithful recreation of the original 1938 Pilot’s Watch, produced in a numbered edition of just 4,938 pieces.

This particular example is number 1773.

Why You’ll Love It

There is something wonderfully different about this Omega. It looks and feels like a watch from another era, yet benefits from the convenience and reliability of a modern automatic chronometer movement.

The black dial is full of character, with oversized luminous Arabic numerals, cathedral-style hands and a beautifully positioned small-seconds display at six o’clock. The contrasting timing scales and rotating bezel add another layer of visual interest, giving the watch a genuine instrument-like appearance.

At 40.2mm, it has a substantial presence without feeling oversized, while the original brown leather strap completes the vintage aviation aesthetic. The strap does show wear consistent with its age and previous use, but remains in good, wearable condition. For a watch of this character, retaining the original leather is a pleasing detail.

This example is presented in very good pre-owned condition and has been mechanically inspected, with the movement performing excellently. It is accompanied by its original Omega outer and inner boxes, together with the Pilot Watch certificate identifying the watch and its serial number.

For someone who appreciates Omega’s history beyond its more familiar collections, this is a particularly interesting piece.

Iconic Status

The Omega Museum Collection is one of the brand’s more intriguing projects. Rather than simply producing another variation of an existing model, Omega returned to its archives and selected historically important watches to recreate for a new generation of collectors.

The 1938 Pilot’s Watch was chosen to begin that series, making it Collector’s Series Number One.

Its historical inspiration is particularly interesting. The original watch was designed at a time when pilots needed clear, easily readable instruments, and its rotating timing scale could assist with calculations during flight. Some period aviation watches were even designed to be worn over flying clothing or strapped to the leg, reflecting the practical demands of early aviation.

Omega retained much of that distinctive appearance in the Museum edition, including the cathedral hands, black dial, prominent numerals and rotating bezel. Beneath the vintage styling sits the automatic Calibre 2200, a certified chronometer with approximately 44 hours of power reserve.

What appeals to me about this watch is that it represents a less familiar side of Omega. It isn’t trying to compete with a Speedmaster or Seamaster. Instead, it celebrates a fascinating period in the company’s history and offers collectors something genuinely different.

With only 4,938 examples produced, each individually numbered, it is also a watch you’re unlikely to encounter particularly often.
